First, reports on the continued crackdown on CDL training providers are putting greater attention on the entire driver qualification process heading into 2027. Next, we’re taking a look at the remaining DOT and FMCSA compliance deadlines that carriers should keep on their radar as 2026 comes to a close. Additionally, we have news on the restoration of the 30-day emergency relief window for certain regional emergency declarations. We also included an update on expanded reserved truck parking options that could give drivers more certainty when planning rest periods. Lastly, we have a piece covering a CLP exemption request denial involving hazardous materials, reinforcing the importance of matching driver credentials and endorsements to the operation.

CDL School Crackdowns in 2027: What Training Providers, Carriers, and Drivers Should Expect Under Increased Federal Enforcement (Dakota Group)
FMCSA’s scrutiny of CDL training providers continues to increase, with the agency removing providers from the Training Provider Registry, investigating additional schools, and expanding its review of third-party CDL skills testers and state licensing practices. The focus is increasingly on whether training, testing, and certification records accurately reflect what actually occurred. Carriers should pay attention to CDL status, training records, Entry-Level Driver Training completion, MVRs, Clearinghouse requirements, and other qualification records when bringing drivers onto the road.
DOT & FMCSA Remaining Deadlines: 2027 Refresher (Dakota Group)
As carriers prepare for 2027, several important DOT, FMCSA, registration, tax, and operational compliance deadlines remain on the calendar. October is particularly important, with the expected opening of 2027 UCR registration and an October 31 MCS-150 deadline for qualifying USDOT numbers. Carriers should also use this time to review their DOT registration information, driver qualification files, Clearinghouse requirements, drug and alcohol testing, ELD status, and other compliance records. Staying ahead of these deadlines can help prevent registration issues and unnecessary disruptions as the new year approaches.
FMCSA Finalizes Emergency Relief Rule (Landline Media)
FMCSA has finalized a rule restoring the emergency relief window from 14 days to 30 days following certain regional emergency declarations. The change reverses the shorter relief period established in 2023 and is intended to provide motor carriers with additional flexibility when responding to qualifying emergencies. Operators should still review the specific emergency declaration and applicable requirements before relying on regulatory relief, particularly when hours-of-service exemptions are involved.
Trucker Path Expands Reserved Parking Network (Heavy Duty Trucking)
Trucker Path has expanded its Reserved Parking Network through the addition of Safe Truck Parking, bringing more than 5,750 additional reservable spaces across 25 locations. The expansion brings the network to more than 70,000 reservable truck parking spaces available through the Trucker Path app. Reliable truck parking remains an important operational and safety issue for drivers. Access to reserved spaces can help drivers plan ahead, reduce uncertainty at the end of a driving shift, and find locations with features such as gated access, surveillance, lighting, and on-site personnel.
Company’s CLP Exemption Denied Over Hazmat Concerns (Land Line Media)
FMCSA has denied an exemption request from Agri-Tech Aviation that would have allowed certain commercial learner’s permit holders who had passed their CDL skills test to operate without a CDL holder in the passenger seat while waiting for their physical CDL. The agency determined that the request did not demonstrate an equivalent level of safety. A major concern was the company’s transportation of jet fuel and crop protection products. FMCSA noted that CLP holders cannot obtain a hazmat endorsement, raising concerns about their ability to transport placarded hazardous materials. The decision reinforces the importance of verifying that a driver has the appropriate CDL class and endorsements for the equipment and cargo they will operate.
